Your car doesn't protect you from sun damage

UVA rays can penetrate your side, rear and sunroof windows.

These rays don’t cause sunburn, so you won't feel the damage. Instead, they travel deeper into the skin, where they contribute to:

  • Skin cancer (like melanoma)
  • Premature ageing (wrinkles, pigmentation, collagen breakdown)
  • DNA damage, which can trigger mutations that lead to cancer and premature ageing

UVA rays are present all day, all year, even when it’s cloudy.

It's quiet, cumulative damage.

BEFORE + AFTER

Historically, skin cancers have been more common on the right side of the body in Australia, and on the left side in the US

Those are the driver’s sides.

28 years of cumulative damage

This man drove a truck for 28 years, and the resulting sun damage can be seen on the side of his face closest to the window.

“Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays transmit through window glass, penetrating the epidermis and upper layers of dermis … UVA has also been shown to induce substantial DNA mutations and direct toxicity, leading to the formation of skin cancer.”

New England Journal of Medicine

Your short daily drives add up

Even quick trips - the kind most people don’t think twice about - can add up to years of sun exposure:

  • school drop-offs
  • trips to the shops
  • your daily commute

Just 30 minutes a day in the car is the equivalent of 4+ years of unprotected sun exposure over a lifetime.
